Level (or float) switches are available it two types.
The first, makes contact (turns on) when it floats up. This is the kind commonly used to turn on a sump pump when water in the sump pit is up to a certain level. This type can also be used as a safety to turn off a pump if the level in the tank is low, so that the pump doesn't run dry and get damaged.
The second type, makes contact (turns on) when it goes down to a certain level. This type is used to open valves to fill a tank when it is low, etc.
These level switches are heavy duty, water tight, and come with a weight so that they can be suspended in a tank at any desired level, and have any desired range from the up to the down position.
